TAKEAWAY MEALS CAN CONTAIN MORE CALORIES THAN YOU SHOULD EAT IN A DAY, RESEARCH FINDS

Takeaway meals can contain more calories than you should eat in a day, research finds

Whether it's pizza, fries, burgers, kebabs or sandwiches, six in ten takeaways don't meet the nutritional guidelines for a maximum 600 calories for lunch or dinner. Indeed, research conducted in Great Britain has highlighted the potential role of fast food and takeaways in the current obesity crisis.

Imagine eating a pizza and then nothing else for the rest of the day! To stay in line with nutritional recommendations, you might have to make do with a takeaway meal alone. And even then, this kind of food choice should remain occasional, due to its high fat content. Research carried out in England, Wales and Scotland by the social innovation agencyNesta, and reported by TheGuardian, sounds the alarm about the calorie content of take-out meals. These foods are not subject to any regulations on their nutritional content. And, even if common sense is the key to a balanced diet, it's not always easy to make the best choices when there's a plethora of options available, both logistically and financially. Indeed, these options serve a daily life in which everything moves fast, and where we're constantly in a hurry....

One contributing factor in Great Britain is pre-packaged sandwiches and wraps, which are among the most popular of these "dishes," with some 1.2 billion sold every year. When supermarkets propose these as part of meal deals, together with a snack and a drink, they contain on average 730 calories, according to the research. However, according to the World Health Organization, a woman should consume a maximum of 2,000 calories a day, compared with 2,500 for a man, depending on their physical activity levels. Clearly, this type of menu leaves little room for other meals throughout the day. And that's exactly the problem highlighted by this study, in a context where obesity is a major public health issue in Great Britain. More generally, theWHOwarned in March that at least one person in eight worldwide is living with obesity, or one billion people in 2022. This proportion has quadrupled among young people aged 5 to 19 since 1990.

According to Nesta's analysis, from a purely calorific point of view, it's the pizza that raises the most questions, totaling between 2,000 and 2,400 calories. A menu consisting of a chicken burger with nuggets, a soda and a side dish comes to around 1,658 calories. Even the UK's sacred fish and chips is a cause for concern, at 1,425 calories. In fact, six in ten takeaway meals contain more than 600 calories, the amount recommended for lunch or dinner. In Great Britain, the stakes are high, with 11% of the population using takeaways and fast food every day. Moreover, it is estimated that around 60% of people eat these foods at least once a week.
