Watermelon is a fruit high in sugar, and although also high in water, it is not recommended for diabetics, both type 1 and type 2. This is because in diabetes, carbohydrate metabolism is impaired which means the more sugar/glucose/carbohydrates we ingest, the more our blood sugar will raise and the more medication we'll need: for type 1 diabetics, this means more insulin and for type 2 diabetics either more insulin or more medication to mitigate the high glucose effect. We have to understand that more insulin or diabetes medication means not only more money, but also faster aging, more fat gain and more commorbities.
Diabetics can consume watermelon but it is advised to be consumed in small portions throughout the day in order to reduce the glycemic load of the meal, thus reduce the glycemic response. Moreover, it is advised to be consumed alongside high fiber or high fat foods in order to flatten the glucose response.
